On April 7, China Institute hosted the first virtual program in our ‘Beyond COVID0-19’ series, asking Has China Won?. Leading public intellectuals Kishore Mahbubani and Graham Allison shared insights on the shifting global order in the time of coronavirus and what it will mean for businesses and our lives for many years to come. The conversaiton was moderated by FT columnist Rana Foroohar.

In a world already turned upside down by the global health crisis, a trade war, and financial turmoil, journalists’ expulsions and diplomatic clashes have escalated U.S.-China tension to a new degree. At this uncertain juncture, will the rest of the world continue to look to the United States as a model for economic, technological, and political leadership?
Kishore Mahbubani, a diplomat and public intellectual with unrivaled access to policymakers in Beijing and Washington, and Graham Allison, Harvard University professor and author of bestseller Destined for War, will shed light on the shifting global order in the time of coronavirus and what it will mean for businesses and our lives for many years to come. The conversation will be moderated by FT columnist Rana Foroohar. This event is timed to coincide with the publication of Mahbubani’s new book, Has China Won?

A veteran diplomat, student of philosophy, and celebrated author, Kishore Mahbubani is currently a Distinguished Fellow at the National University of Singapore’s Asia Research Institute. Mahbubani is also a former President of the UN Security Council (Jan 2001, May 2002) and the Founding Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (2004-2017). Mahbubani writes and speaks prolifically on the rise of Asia, geopolitics and global governance. His eight books and articles in the New York Times, Washington Post, Financial Times and Foreign Affairs have earned him global recognition as “the muse of the Asian century.” He was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in October 2019. Graham Allison is the Douglas Dillon Professor of Government at Harvard University, where he has taught for five decades. His latest book, Destined for War: Can America and China Escape Thucydides’s Trap? (2017), is a national and international bestseller. Allison was the Founding Dean of Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, and was an Assistant Secretary of Defense in the first Clinton Administration. He was educated at Davidson College; Harvard College (B.A., magna cum laude, in History); Oxford University (B.A. and M.A., First Class Honors in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics); and Harvard University (Ph.D. in Political Science).
